How the count works

The calculator works on calendar dates, not on 365-day years. Years and months are counted first, then the days left over, so leap years and months of different lengths come out right. The total number of days is counted separately, one day at a time.

The same start date gives the same answer wherever you are: time zones and daylight saving changes do not move the result by a day.

Milestones worth marking

Yearly anniversaries are not the only ones people celebrate. In a new relationship the first month, three months and six months often matter more than the first year. Day counts have their own following: 100 days, 500 days, 1,000 days and, a little over 27 years in, 10,000 days. On the day you reach one, this page says so, which makes for a good screenshot.

Anniversary gifts by year

Each wedding anniversary has a traditional theme and a modern one. Some couples follow the list every year, others only for the big ones, and many ignore it. It is most useful when you are stuck for an idea.

There is no single official list, and published versions differ in a few places. The table below follows the list compiled by the Chicago Public Library, with the second traditional options that Hallmark’s list adds. The fourth year is the main disagreement: fruit or flowers on some lists, linen or silk on others.

Questions people ask

Which date should we count our anniversary from?

There is no rule. Couples use the first date, the day they made it official, the engagement or the wedding day, and plenty keep more than one. Pick the day that feels like the start to both of you, and use the “Counting from” option to label it.

How do you count years of marriage?

Your first anniversary is one full year after the wedding day, so the number of the anniversary is the number of whole years completed. A couple married on June 15, 2019 celebrates their 8th anniversary on June 15, 2027.

When is our 1,000 day anniversary?

It is the wedding or start date plus 1,000 days, which lands about two years and nine months in. Enter your date above and the milestone list shows the exact day, along with 100, 500, 3,000 and 10,000 days.

What if we got married on February 29?

In years without a February 29 this calculator places the anniversary on February 28, the last day of the month. Some couples prefer March 1; the day count is the same either way.

Does the calculator include today?

It counts whole days that have passed since the start date, so the start date itself is day zero. On the day after your wedding you have been married for 1 day.

Will the page remember our date?

Yes, on the device you used. The date is kept in your browser so the count is there when you come back, and it is never sent to a server. “Clear and start over” removes it.
